Steelmakers are boosting production capacity in the U.S. again in a bet that they can break the grip that cheap imports have on American industrial supply chains. Large steel manufacturers such as Nucor Corp., Tenaris SA and Big River Steel LLC are building mills and accelerating output as steel imports into the U.S. continue to rise. The hope is that new U.S. tariffs will help ward off cheaper foreign goods, but they’re also pointing to bigger changes in manufacturing and logistics trends that they expect to boost domestic demand. Will their gamble pay off?
